Located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the 170,355-square-foot Armed Forces Reserve Center Complex is a $37.7 million dollar fixed-price contract to design-build a field maintenance shop (56,749-sq-ft) and a one-story armed forces reserve center (113,506-sq-ft).
Important functional design attributes include the need for clear circulation, spatial organization and allowances for base fluctuations with soldier deployments and drill weekends, and possible future expansion of the facility. This multi-functional base includes a health clinic, drill hall, field maintenance shop, simulated weapons area, and a staging center for soldiers being deployed.
The Armed Forces Reserve Center Complex is seeking LEED Gold Certification. Sustainable elements under consideration are energy-efficient mechanical systems and geo-thermal heating, water conservation measures, highly insulated exterior wall and roofing systems, and lighting controls.
